Win 10.000,- EUR at the "Qtest Mobile App Port"

Win 10.000,- EUR at the "Qtest Mobile App Port"

Qtest Mobile App Port
Contest for Qt and KDE applications

Win 10.000,- EUR at the "Qtest Mobile App Port"

Welcome to the Qtest Mobile App Port! As developers of applications using Qt, you already know how great it is to work with - but how about on mobile platforms, such as Symbian and MeeGo? How would you like to take that step you have been wanting to take, but not been able to justify: Take your application from the desktop and bring it into the hand-held world via the Ovi store.
Let this contest be the justification, with the possibility of a new phone or even 10,000 euros waiting at the end.

Dates:
The contest starts on 20th of December, 2010, and runs till 28th of February. The 31st of December is important for you if you wish to take part in the Early Bird competition. If you do no win, you will still take part in the main competition, and will be allowed to continue your work and submit new versions to the Ovi Store. The 28th of February is the deadline for taking part in the main competition.

Developer Sprint: There will be a sponsored developer sprint organized together with the KDE e.V. during the competition. The travel and stay can be paid for if you do not have the budget yourself. Further details will be made public at a later time, and all participants will be notified of this information via email.

Win 10.000,- EUR at the "Qtest Mobile App Port"

Judging and prizes:
The Qtest Mobile App Port is evaluated by a panel of judges which will be announced in the next few days. The jury will pic 5 winners at 31th of December as the early bird winners. Every winner gets a free N900 phone. The main competition first prize is EUR 10,000, which will be awarded to the application which the judges find to be the best ported application. The second to sixth price will be another 5 N900 phones.

And, finally: Everybody who takes part in the competition will be awarded a gift bag, with a T-shirt and other merchandise.

Eligibility:

To be able to take part in the contest, the ported application must be submitted for Ovi Store signing by one of the two deadlines:
- Early bird entries must be submitted by December 31st
- Standard entries must be submitted by February 28th

You also have to submit your application to the "Mobile Contest" category on Qt-Apps.org or MeeGo-Central.org

You can submit your application to the Ovi Store as many times as you wish during the competition. This allows you to get feedback from the public on your software. It´s possible to submit new or existing KDE/Qt applications

So have fun and good luck everybody!

UPDATE:

Contest deadline extended
Several developers approached me and asked for more time to port their applications.
So we extend the deadline of the contest to 15. of April. Everybody has one more month to port a KDE or Qt application to Symbian or MeeGo.
Remember that you can win 10.000,- so please consider to make your KDE or Qt application ready for mobile.

You find more informatiuon in the original contest announcement:
http://blog.karlitschek.de/2010/12/qtest-mobile-app-port-contest-launched.html

Please make sure that you also provide binaries for you applications. This makes is a lot easier for the jury to test you application.

Have fun and good luck.

Cheers
Frank

Should we contact someone or fill any kind of form to participate in this contest? Or just add app to the Qt-Apps.org's Mobile Contest category and send for submission to Ovi Store?

How much projects can be registered from one developer?

Just upload you application to Qt-Apps.org and Ovi and you will participate. We will contart you if you win a price for the details. :-)
You can submit as many applications as you want.

You application must be accepted by Ovi to win of course. :-)

Can a developer port and submit an application not originally made by him/her ?

Well the idea is that you port and submit you own application. It´s also O.K. if you port the application of someone else if you have the written approval from the original author that you submit the application in you name.

what if the application is available under a GPL license. Then too written approval is required.

Well. I think it is very bad style if you take an application from a developer and submit for the contest in your name.
Only because it is GPL doesn´t mean that you can claim that it is your work. :-)

Well, I had my app in qt-prop Education. Just updated to the mobile contest section. Will you contact the participants to let them know that their submission fits the contest requirements ? I mean, send an email saying "your submission it's ok has been accepted, or it's not accepted because needs this or that" ? Just for the record my app is the calculator Math Graphica.
Thank you.

 Already ported application

by Lawand on: Dec 29 2010

Score 50%

I have recently created an application named GNGT (http://qt-apps.org/content/show.php?content=135586)

GNGT is already ported for Symbian. Is it eligible to enter the contest?

I am working on another application right now, but I just wanted to know if I can also submit GNGT to increase my chances of winning.

 Proprietary apps

by ssorgatem on: Dec 29 2010

I've seen some proprietary apps in the Qt Mobile contest category. Are they allowed to participate without releasing their source code? Doesn't that go against the rules of Qt-Apps.org?

You are right. The sourcecode should be available to win.

It's not fair! There are no limitations on publishing content on Qt-Apps.org and no such (open source only) limitations in contest rules.

Well, the source code should be or must be available? That's a crucial point!

Like slavachernikoff, I don't see any problem in submitting closed source applications - even if they are not free and you have to pay for it. That was/is neither mentioned at the qt-apps.org site nor in the contest description.

It would be nice if you could clarify that till tomorrow... The early bird surly won't wait ;-)

Also, besides what Lykurg said, you also put the references to the contest in the qt-prop.org, so it doens't seem wrong that a submitted app is propretary

O.K. You are right. I should be more clear. :-)
Proprietary apps without sourcecode is allowed in the contest. But the contest category is shared between Qt-Apps.org and Qt-Prop.org which is a bit confusing here.
I think it is O.K. to submit proprietary apps to the contest but you should move the app into the right category after the contest so that proprietary apps only show up on Qt-Prop.org

Sorry for the confusion

That's fine. So my app is up :)

...if the source code is needed for judging purpose, I can provide it directly.

Thanks for the reply,
but this whole signing process is way too complicated for me.

Isnt there a way by which i can just upload the source and they can do watever they want to do to evaluate my app.??

If i am unable to submit the app in ovi although i have created an account, would they consider the submission in qt-apps.org???

Thank you,

Mohit
